30 Jan Reduce your chances of having a stroke
We do not take advantage of the days we have. If I told you someone was going to attack your brain you would try and stop it. That is what a stoke is, a brain attack. This horrible occurrence happens when the blood supply to the brain is block or cutoff. This happened to a close family member of mine. Think how horrible this would be if your brain did not get the essential nutrients and oxygen. Without this your brain cells can be damaged or die. The sad thing is everyone response to this differently. Strokes can affect the way your body works, how you think, feel and communicate. Stokes come in different shapes and forms.
Different types of stroke
- Ischaemic stroke – a blockage cutting off the blood supply to the brain. A transient ischaemic attack or TIA is also known as a mini-stroke. It is the same as a stroke, except that the symptoms last for a short amount of time and no longer than 24 hours. This is because the blockage that stops the blood getting to your brain is temporary.
- Haemorrhagic stroke – bleeding in or around the brain.
- Childhood stroke
Anyone can have a stroke including babies and children. The causes for children are very different from those for adults.
What causes stroke?
As we get older our arteries become harder and narrower; more likely to become blocked. However, certain medical conditions and lifestyle factors can speed up this process and increase your risk of having a stroke.
To ward off strokes, eat more fruits. Studies show that people who ate the most fruit had a 40% lower risk of ischemic stroke, the most common type, compared to those who ate little fruit. Citrus fruits were most protective. The likely protective elements in these foods are vitamin C and flavonoid pigments, plus an array of other antioxidants and phytochemicals.
